SENTINELESE: THE TRUE WARRIORS & PROTECTORS

Sentinelese Tribal community

Communities – Not a foreign word and to put it simple, ‘it is a group we live among those who share similar characters’. But in depth, it has the power to mould us to who and what we have to become tomorrow. It reflects our responsibilities, care, love, duty, and many more values. But the question is, how many of us are dedicating ourselves for the safety and betterment of our community?

What is so fascinating to know about communities!! – This is what we mostly think on such topics. Then again, it is quite interesting to know about a particular tribe existing on this very same earth, but hidden to us. If they are living among us for thousands of years, then how is it possible to stay hidden in this most modern era??

Sentinelese – true to their word meaning, they are the warriors and protectors of their community. They are habitants of North Sentinel Island, a territory of India. They were noticed by the world after a report
John Allen Chau

of 27-year-old John Allen Chau, an American would-be missionary was murdered in 2018, while trying to make a contact with the tribe. This news is definitely horrific and then on, this island and its inhabitants are considered as endangered, yet dangerous. If so, to what extend is it true? On what basis we are pointing finger against them, when we ourselves surrounded by sin !!!

T.N. Pandit

According to T N Pandit, an Indian anthropologist, Sentinelese are ‘peace-loving’ people. Mr. Pandit has spent the longest time duration, say decades, with these people. The tribe never welcomes a foreign intruder to their home. Reports say that even the nearby tribal communities have no access to this mysterious place.

Sentinelese Tribe

Sentinelese are an army of people who are always hidden in their jungle and holds bow and arrow aiming and gawking for anyone who trespasses their safety. Apart from safety issues, some says that the immunity power of Sentinelese are very low to an extent to which they easily catch common diseases like flu and measles. These points are crystal clear if we cross-check the difficulties Mr. Pandit and colleagues experienced while visiting North Sentinel Island. He confirmed that the gestures or to be specific-threats from a young tribal boy made it clear that they were not to step onto their island. So were the gifts they brought for this community. After a long persuasion, even though the language was obscure, these intruders somehow managed to accomplish their mission partly, though they were not allowed to explore or step-on the island.

The wish of Sentinels to be isolated from rest of the world for their well-being is supported by the authorities also. Nevertheless, the census report shows a drastic decline in the population, counted as 117 in the year 1991 to 15 in 2011. Reason for this is unsure. Yet again, for the sake of tourism, as
Andaman & Nicobar Islands are infamous for the coral reefs, palm-lined white sand beaches, and so on. Furthermore, invasion of tourists can adversely affect this enigmatic island and her children. As a result, officials brought laws regarding the situation and thus a permit is necessary for visiting the island.
